Former South African cricketer AB de Villiers said that rules need to be formed in such a way so that they do not give rise to ‘anger and confusion’. The veteran put forth his remarks after Virat Kohli got out under controversial circumstances during the match between KKR and RCB on Sunday, April 21 at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
During RCB’s run-chase, Harshit Rana bowled a full toss and Kohli gave the bowler a simple return catch. To check whether the ball was legal or not, the on-field umpires sent the decisions upstairs. Technology showed that Rana’s ball was below the waist height and Kohli had to walk back to the pavilion after scoring 18 runs off 7 balls.

Rana bowled a slower ball and the third umpire reckoned that the ball was dipping enough for the batter to be given out. After getting out, the 35-year-old Kohli was furious as he had a heated discussion with the umpires before walking off.
‘Not a tough fix’
After the controversial dismissal, De Villiers took to ‘X’ and wrote, “Grey areas in the game open up room for anger and confusion. It’s not a tough fix this. Get the batter’s stance, draw the lines and use ball tracking. No confusion whatsoever.”
Earlier, De Villiers, who played alongside Kohli for RCB from 2011 to 2021, also spoke about rules surrounding ‘wides’.
“For goodness sake, PLEASE just clarify the wide ruling in Cricket! Really not so difficult.. We have technology, let’s use it properly. No need for thumb-sucking surely.”
After RCB were asked to chase down a bog target of 223, Kohli took the attack to Harshit, hitting him for a four and a six in the very first over. In the second over, he smacked Mitchell Starc for a six before getting out in the third over.
