Karan Johar was the chief guest at the launch of a production house started by Usha Kakade. The veteran filmmaker raised laughs and also raised some important points about Marathi cinema. Karan began by saying, “I’d like to congratulate Usha ji on the launch of Usha Kakade Productions. And if the logo reveal is so dramatic, then it’s safe to say that yeh toh sirf trailer tha. Bahut saari filmein abhi baaki hai.” He also added, “Usha ji is a friend and she has contributed so much through her philanthropic work.”

KJo further said, “I am a huge fan of Marathi cinema. I am privileged that I am on this stage to launch a powerful production house. I also saw immense talent on stage (looks at actors of the film Vicky who were earlier on the stage) – they are clicking selfies with each other right now. Very lovely!”

Talking about the announcement of the first film under Usha Kakade Productions, Karan said, “Vicky is a very lucky title. Iska ‘Donor’ bhi ban chukka hai! Moreover, Vicky Kaushal is a big star. Hence, Usha ji has chosen a lucky title. I hope the film is a huge hit. Or else, I’ll be blamed for its failure. And I’ll be very happy if I can get some profit from the film’s earnings!” He also quipped that “Usha ji, you must promise me that whenever you have such a grand event, please do invite me.”

The host then asked Karan Johar to mouth a few lines in Marathi. KJo, at this, said, “It’s unfortunate that my Marathi is not good. I am very proud of the state and city I live in. I am also proud of the deep-rooted culture and heritage of not just Marathi cinema but Marathi history in the large scheme of things.” He got claps and hooting when he revealed, “As a kid, I used to watch a TV show ‘Aamchi Maati Aamchi Manasa’.” Eventually, Karan did end up speaking up in Marathi, with help from the anchor.

The host then asked what Marathi cinema could do to further its reach and its box office collections like South industries. Karan remarked, “We were privileged that we got a chance to remake Sairat (2016), which I think is the crowning glory of Marathi cinema. I still remember the day I saw that film. I was so shaken that I couldn’t say a word for 10-15 minutes. What an outstanding performance; I bow down my head to the incredible talent.”

He continued, “Whatever Marathi cinema is doing, it’s great and we should feel proud about it. Kabhi kabhi comparisons mein hum hamari value kam kar dete hai. We should say that it is the best cinema in the world. We should believe it and it’ll be there.”

He also said, “We are proud to have such rich, beautiful talent in Marathi cinema, be it actors, directors, producers, music composers or technicians. And speaking of talent, Manish Malhotra is here!” The costume designer was another chief guest at the event who dropped in late. Karan signed off by saying, “Telugu and Tamil cinema gets a lot of love but hum apne aap mein bhi bahut khush hai aur accha kaam kar rahe hai.”

Also present at the event were Tanishaa Mukerji, Gauahar Khan and others.
